TOPIC: Thetford Toilet Water Valve

Thetford Toilet Water Valve 2 months 2 weeks ago #1

Thetford Toilet water valve problem, has anyone changed out a water valve?
It appears the valve is bad, when we are connected to the water the valve will not shut off, as a result the toilet fills and runs all over the floor. I'm not able to find a shut off valve to just the toilet, so as a result we have no water to the coach. Do I need to remove the toilet to replace the valve?

First off: Are you using a Pressure Regulator on your Hose?
We had a problem once and I talked to Thetford and they suggested to never exceed 60 PSI. I now never connect with out an adjustable regulator set for 45 to 502 PSI and we've never had an issue since.
If you are using a Regulator ignore all above and go buy a Dometic 310 or 320 Toilet and be done with it.

Go to home depot and get a ball valve and cut it into the water line to the toilet.. that way you can shut it off. Also spray the heck out of the pedal mechanism with CRC while working the pedal. This should stop the leaking

Totally agree! If you go to trouble of removing the toilet for any reason get rid of the Thetford & replace with a Dometic 310 (round bowl) or 320 (elongated bowl) as MHS suggested & put the valve behind the toilet as Shane suggested. Our Thetford the foot pedal kept falling off & it cost half the price of the Dometic toilet to replace. Our son used the Thetford for target practice & it was perfect for that, but no so much as a toilet.

I completely agree! I replaced our Thetford a year or so after buying our Redwood after the pedal fell off. Our friend with a Redwood also has problems with water continuing to flow, he put in a shut off valve to stop the flow, not the best solution but it prevents another flood!

I had read a lot about problems with Thetford, but ours worked fine...until the foot pedal broke off. I rigged up a flusher with vice grips for the moment and thought about trying to find parts but instead found a good deal online for a Dometic 320. Had it shipped to the campground and about a 20 minute job replacing it.

Danny.............this must have been another place where Redwood found they could save a few dollars before the sale. My coach came with a Dometic 310 and in 7 years I have not had any issues with it. Once a year I lubricate the valve seal with silicon and it has always worked very well.

IIRC, the foot pedal was $89 shipped & I found a Dometic 310 at a mom/pop RV store on sale for $199. I wouldn't spend a $ on the Thetford, just replace it.
Yes Guy, we've met up the Roland & Laurie several times & they also have one if the very early '12s & there's a lot of differences between my early '13.

Thanks everyone for your responses and advise. I love this site, you guys are the best.
I'm pertty sure it was a waterpressure problem, as a short term fix I opened the blackwater valve and put a screwdriver in the toilet to hold open the opening in the bottom of the toilet. As we are traveling and when we reached our next park it started working again. Maybe I can make it back to AZ before I replace it. In any case with your comments I have some good ideas on how to fix it.

Just a word of caution on leaving the Black valve open, the liquid well drain out leaving any solids sitting there in the bottom, which over time can create a serious problem.

before I pull out of camp site I use the tank flush for 2-3 tank fill up and dump 40 gallons of black water then drop dishwashing soap in the toilet with 15 gallons of fresh water for the ride home. this seams to keep the valves cleans and sealing good , with no poop nuggets on the rinse at home. if you don't have a place to dump at home your next trip dump it then. seams to work and I would bet there are many other methods to stop solid build up.
