Haven't had a problem with the awning latching. Couple of questions - how much pitch do you have front to back. I set ours 5 years ago, but recall reading about a max pitch or it could impact closing.

Do you have the awning switch in the basement and if yes, does it have a cover. Seems an unlikely cause, as it only opens 4", as some were fully opening while driving.

Should be a series of about 6 holes in the arms with a spring loaded button. You can lower 1 end to facilitate draining water when it rains.

I have both of mine set as low (steepest pitch) as they will go & then raised the center arms 1 hole so water runs to opposite ends. The Carefree manual says no more than 3 holes difference between arms will not affect the awning operation, do not have to readjust to extend or retract. Mine have been set in this position for 5+ years, never had them hold water & never unroll while traveling.
If they are unrolling check, that the plug up in the corners are clean, dry, & tight, with no power the motor will be in neutral. I check mine & add a dab of dielectic silicone grease to the plug occasionally.
