Our Redwood came with generator prep like many Redwoods are specked with.
I have though about a generator for some time now, it is one of those nice to have items on certain occasions but would I spend 5K+ to install an Onan Generator for occasional use?
It was tough for me to justify the expense.
I finally took a alternate route and purchased a 4500 watt portable generator off Amazon for about $1000.
The unit I bought runs quiet and seems to be a well made unit for its price point.
The generator we bought has 4500 Watts peak power and a running power of 3700 Watts.
It has a standard 30 Amp RV plug on the front of it.
We tested it and running 1 A/C and the Microwave along with our 12 Converter power with no problem.
I made some ramps and a platform in the front compartment, it is fairly easy to just roll in and fits quite nicely in the front compartment.
For our needs of occasional use, this meets our needs at a lower price point.
I will get some pictures of the Generator in operation and in storage posted.

Rob ~ I came to the same conclusion about 3 years ago. Bought a 3100 Champion. Not quite as quiet as a Honda but half the cost and like you I put it in the generator compartment with a small ramp that the sits on top of it and is used as a shelf. Only used it a couple times but nice insurance.

I found a 30' power cord on Amazon that has a 50 amp female end for the coach and a 30 amp male for the generator so no adapter needed. Also picke up a 25' heavy security cable at Lowes. The couple of times weve boondocked with it I put the genset out 20' something from the rear of the coach, locked the cable and fired it up. With the windows closed you really can't hear it and even with them open its not bad.

This also left the transfer switch in the front still available so I wired my 3000 watt inverter into the transfer switch and it powers the one leg when were on the road.
