TOPIC: RDS Auxiliary fuel tanks

RDS Auxiliary fuel tanks 6 months 1 week ago #1

Time has come now that we're headed west and since I've ready almost run out of fuel twice, I need to carry more. While I would love to put a Titan tank under the truck or one of the brands that has pumps and gauges and will fit perfectly around my Roll n Lock, since I'm now a poor retired person I have limited funds.
I keep looking at the RDS tanks and how simple they are. They make a 40 gal that would do exactly what I want.

Reviews online are mixed. Some love, some hate. I'm wondering if the ones that hate didn't do the install and venting correctly.

Anyone have any personal experience with this tank setup ?

Vaughan, I'm looking at the RDS-72775 40 gal Diesel and 10" Tool Box. Our Travel Friends, the Sykes who you met at last years Rally, have that tank in their Super Duty and love it. He has a electronic control valve tied into one of the "Up Fitter" switches on the Dash.
Let me know if you find some place that offers "Free Shipping", Amazon does, but their price is approx $200 higher than anybody else.
Best price I've found is at Tank & Barrel @ $577.99 plus shipping.
Or if you're in the Pan Handle of Florida the RDS Plant is up there, you might be able to pick one up and save the shipping.
Keep us posted on what you do.

Will do. I'm looking at the 71804 tank. 37 gal and will slide under the container for my Roll n Lock cover so I don't lose much bed storage space.

One item to consider...Some states won't allow gravity feed systems. IF (and that is a big IF), they catch you, they could write a ticket. California is one of those States.

I'm not sure how many other States have this regulation but it might worth a look just as a heads-up.

That might be one of the advantages of the RDS-72775, as the filler port is actually under the cover for the tool box, so there is no visible filler cap, so someone would have to open the cover to see it, plus the cover can be locked and not have to worry about some joker messing with anything.

California is one of those states that I really have no urge to go to. I'd have to unhook the Focus, being concerned about the fuel tank would be wayyyyy down on my list of things to worry about.
But thanks for the info.

I'm going with the 70387 tank. 40 gal and will fit under the Roll n Lock can so I lose minimal space. Now to look for a storage compartment that will fit in where I want it and under the cover ...........

Planning on getting from Northern Tool unless someone has a better $$$ place. They're prices are good and shipping is reasonable.

Vaughan, our trip to the Redwoods in CA was awesome. Don't rule it out even though they are a bit anal. You could drop the car somewhere at a airport parking or something and come back and get it.

Vaughan,
We have almost the same set-up as what you're looking at. We just use a couple of lidded totes between the auxiliary tank and the comfort ride hitch. Just make sure they're shallow enough to clear the Roll 'n Lock cover.

Please excuse the dust. Most of the time the cover is closed and gets forgotten when we clean the vehicle.

Has anyone installed an Aux Tank in a 2017/18 Chevy? If so what install kit did you use?
Looking at the RDS site they claim that the 2017/18 Chevys use the Ford kit as the filler is 1 1/2" vs the older trucks that had a 2" filler neck.
Just trying to get a confirmation.
