Our hardly-used Redwood came with Westlake G rated tires. Did some research but couldn't find much on their reliability. They look good after about 2000 miles and I'm running 110 psi. I am only running at 65 mph. Anyone else have these?

Paul,

The factory upgraded the standard tires from Marathon "E" tires to "G" rated tires in mid 2014. I seem to recall they initially supplied Goodyear G614's, but by August 2014 they had switched to Westlake.

Unless an optional tire was ordered, every coach in the past 2 years was supplied with your tires, so you will find many Redwoods on the road with these tires.

We immediately changed the Marathons to Goodyear G614's and have about 25,000 trouble free miles on them. My only knowledge of Westlake is that they come from China.

I don't have any experience with that brand, but as long as they're G rated. You keep them inflated (a TPMS is a good investment), & youre only driving that speed I'd run them til you felt uncomfortable with them then up grade to H rated. My GY Gs have between 40-50k on the & tread still looks good, but am upgrading to Hs this winter due to mileage & age. As I stated, invest in a TPMS for now & see what happens.

I haven't heard of anyone having issues with the Westlake brand. They are manufactured in China, but are supposed to be a good tire.

I had upgraded my tires to the GY 17.5 about 3 months before getting the RW... They had 600 miles on them when the RW came in....
I have the dealer swap the rims and tires onto my Montego Bay... So someone purchased my Montego Bay with brand new G rated Westlakes , and RW stock wheels... ANd I drove off the lot with my RW and 6oo miles on my GY G-114's . . .

No personal experience but you may want to go on-line to some other forums as well and check out their opinions.

It appears that in 2006-2007, they had a bad string of tires with inferior glue products. The tires were recalled.

I looked up "Recalls". This might interest you:

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2007/08/tire-recall-importer-recalls-255-000-tires/index.htm

This is but a very small sampling. There are a number of reviews for just about any tire. You can't trust them all but if there are more complaints or recalls about 1 tire than another, it's worth noting.

As for retail price, there is a reason the RV industry uses the Westlake...They are obviously cheaper. It's not about quality. They just need to get it out of the factory and into your driveway. Isn't that obvious with some of the other engineering issues we are regularly discussing? BTW, go to your local RV center and checkout the Westlake tires installed on the less expensive RV's...You won't see a Goodyear or Michelin on those models. There is a reason for that.

  • Check out the number of tread plys for the Westlake, Goodyear and Michelin.
  • Check out the side wall plys.
  • Check out the Mileage warranties.
  • Check out the overall price for each.

A least Spot Check the reviews on other sites. Remember that there are only 501 members on this site. Less than 10% regularly participate. So, don't let this be your only resource.

Let us know what you go with. My preference is Goodyear G rated tires until I upgrade to the H tires for better protection. Remember that price is not everything. Blow one tire, rip your RV Side Wall at $8000 and puncture a propane line...You might not have to worry about that replacement tire or RV anymore

All good thoughts and suggestions. I had Sailun 637 G's on my previous rig and planned on moving those tires to the RW, but then noticed unusual wear on the inside tread due to a bent axle so left them with the trade in. So far (only about 1500 miles) I'm pleased with the Westlakes. Probably will replace them with Sailuns and/or upgrade to H when the time comes.

Coming over from the Montana forum with their extensive experience with tire problems. Can't believe RW would deliver a trailer of this weight with E tires and thankful mine has G.
