Picked up my repaired RW today in Bremen, IN and with new H rated 17.5 inch tires. Cold pressure is 110 PSI max per Firestone. I set the pressure at 95 PSI. Within ten miles, at 45 MPH the tires were at 117 PSI setting off the TPMS alarm. I again dropped the pressure to about 92 PSI. Within another 15miles, at 45 MPH the pressures were at approximately 97 PSI.

Question - where do you set your cold pressure for H rated 17.5" tires? I am very gun shy after the recent blowout with the old 16" Marathon's.

I would set them to the max pressure it calls for on the sidewall which is max pressure cold. You can adjust them down if the trailer is riding to rough. You also need to change the parameter on your tpms to avoid the false alarms. My tire pressure will go up 15 degrees when travelling

My Goodyear H rated call for 125 psi and that is where I run mine at.

A 15+ degree gain is not at all unusual, as stated reset your TPMS or you'll drive yourself nuts with alarms.

At 110 psi you have a load capacity of 4340 lbs. at least a 20% reserve load capacity. Your axle weight is prox 6,400 lbs. 95 psi is not enough.

We are running 12 ply steel belted Hercules tires (16in) and just had them rotated at a local heavy truck repair/tire center. The technician stated based on our weight, approx. 15,200lbs, to air the tires cold at 95lbs.

I would run them at max pressure. All Redwoods with 16" tires should be at max pressure to give you as much reserve load capacity as possible.

After a lot of research on tires, I also agree with Titan Guy. Run at 100% fill of 110 lbs. Unless you have done a smart weigh, you're likely to be very imbalanced anyway. Some of your tires may be at max. capacity already.

John, I don't know who your tire center is. But they are not giving you good advice as it pertains to RV's especially Fifth wheels. 95 psi is way to low and will wear your tires prematurely.

Go to max, nobody rides back there to notice of the ride is a bit rougher.

I would go with the max cold tire pressure, it might even make the tires run cooler compared to a lower pressure.

In terms of the TPMS, I look at the tire temperatures instead of those higher pressures, I'm looking to make sure that stuff like overheated bearings isn't causing the high temps and perhaps even a slow leak.

I also go with 125 . . My tire guy is great... But he don't know CR@p about RV's... He also told me not to run the 17.5's as they would beat up my trailer... I now don't ask him for advise on y camper anymore... I just order tires for our big trucks...

Ron, What pressure do you recommend for the 114 tires?

Shane, great advice. With the tire pressures set to 110 PSI (molded onto the H rated tire sides is 125 PSI cold tire pressure at max load of 4805 pounds) the pressures stabilized around the low to mid 120's depending upon road temperatures. The tire temps were in the mid 80's-90's degrees F. Trip home to near Kansas City from Bremen, IN was trouble free, except the spare tire was just off the road surface when we arrived home. I had inspected the spare tire about two hours before so stuff happens quickly. Once this rain clears out I will crawl under and see why the winch let the tire drop and will inspect the spare (the original from RW so will need to soon replace it due to date code) for any damage. Might find a spare 17.5 inch mounted tire on Craigs List.

I did reset the upper pressure on the TPMS and that did the trick on the alarm.

As Titan Guy and others noted I have the PSI set too low and need to set the pressure at the max on the tires (125 PSI). Still learning this tire world. I did go to the Firestone Commercial Tire web site and downloaded the PDF that list my H rated 17.5 inch tire with max load ratings for various tire pressures. Good stuff!! Per the Firestone chart the max load for this tire is 4330 pounds at 110 PSI so I was okay for this trip however setting to max should give less rolling friction and wear while increasing max load to 4805 pounds (I hope).

Thanks again to all for sharing your insights on my tire pressure question. B)
