suspension wet bolt broke holding spring to chasis

Has anyone had a wet bolt brake? this bolt holds rear spring to the chassis. when it broke it caused axle to shift damaging tires and equi flex suspension. I also am going to have bearings checked, not sure what caused this bolt to brake, hopefully the I beams are not flexing. I have had the unit at a dealer now for 5 weeks still waiting on keystones warranty dept. Has any body else had any problems with the chassis. 2017 redwood 38 rl w/ 8000 lb axles rated tires

Your best cure is to upgrade to the MorRyde heavy shackles, wet bolts, bronze bushings, & if your equalizer is damaged add the MR SRE4000 in its place.
On earlier RWs all the spring bushings were plastic & would not take grease. I did the upgrade at 5-6k miles & all the plastic bushings were shredded. If hasn't been greased or has the plastic bushings most likely it ceased up & broke the bolt.

Unit has the bronze bushings and I grease before each trip, maybe I should do an upgrade on suspension,but unit is suppose to be under warranty

when you order your sre 4000 kit they are going to ask you if the distance between your your wheels is 33 or 35 in". Just measure center of hub to center of hub.

If you're able to do the upgrade yourself it's a relatively simple job & won't affect your warranty other than you won't have to have it repaired again under warranty.

In answer to your question, yes, I lost a wet bolt this past summer (2013 36RL, 7K axles). I had the wet bolts installed a couple of years ago as the OEM plastic bushings etc were toast. I believe the cause of the failure was bad roads and bad (weak) design on the wet bolts. Our dealer replaced all the bolts with (dry) grade 8 bolts and "never fail" bushings, he has seen a number of failures of wet bolts.
The words never fail is an oxymoron but I believe that checking (and possible replacement) of the bushings every couple of years is a better solution than a loss of a bolt. I was fortunate that the spring sat on the bottom of the frame until I got home and I installed a bolt and nut temporarily until I got to the dealer, the shackles also flipped in the process!

Our travel partners also lost a wet bolt early this past season. They just had the Mor/ryde IS installed and he asked the Techs about them and was told they often see broken wet bolts that are still in place when they pull the OEM suspension off.

Yes, the curb side rear spring eye wet bolt with plastic bushing just broke on our 2015 36rl w/7000 lb axles. The spring hangers are bent on both side of the trailer and the wheel bent the slide "rod" so the curbside slide won't come out. Just bought the MorRyde wet bolt kit and the SRE4000 with 3 cross members. Also chewed up the equalizer and the brand new Sailun H rated tire. Temporarily, I put in a grade 8 bolt and one of the bushings from the wet bolt kit. I need to find a shop Monday that can fix the spring hangers AND install the MorRyde stuff - it's not a job I can tackle. VERY disappointed with this rig and all the Lippert stuff that keeps breaking.

When talking to my son recently about the wet bolt system he told me that drilling holes into a bolt will weaken the bolt and didnt know why anybody would use them. Thinking about it makes a lot of sense.

Yes, I can understand this. The piece of wet bolt remaining in the spring hanger was broken in half at the "grease hole". I've also seen a picture of another wet bolt and it too appeared to have broken in half at the "hole". I also think, however, that bronze, instead of plastic bushings would make a world of difference. Sure hope it's not just wish thinking!

It’s not my intention to defend Lippert or any inferior product but to those who have had failures had you ACTUALLY weighed your coach fully loaded and prepped for travel. I recently attended an RV Safety Seminar in which they weighed not only each axle but each tire and pin. It’s pretty easy to exceed the cargo capacity of many coaches and get into an over weight situation. The safety presenters had some very alarming statistics about how many rigs are traveling the highways the are severely overweight or on unbalanced loads. Equipment is engineered for specific parameters with little room for exceeding those parameters without failure. Just some food for thought regarding these failures.
