Hi all. Been a while since I was on. We're going to be traveling through USA this winter and are looking to buy a great GPS system. Can you tell me what you're running and how you like it please? Thanks
Rand McNally/C World ok after getting use to it. Keep and use all Road maps for each state as you enter (attended Rest Stops). Check with them to see about construction sites. Have found Maps are best and GPS's are good IF you plan your routs after mapping .
So far Google maps on our our phones is best & don't have to buy updates or more devices.
Trucker Path is also a very good app for towing your RW, if trucks can go so can you.
Motor Carriers atlas list low clearances in every state, plus truck routes are highlighted.

I use a Rand McNally 7720 RVND GPS. You can program it with the height, weight and length of the 5th wheel. So far, in 4 years, it has not failed to provide a safe and good routing. It has an RV mode as well as a car mode so when not pulling the RV, I use the car mode.
I also carry a Rand McNally Motor Carriers Road Atlas which has the highlighted truck routes. The routes which are safe for trucks are also safe for the 5th wheel.
We also use Google maps on our phone.
Will look into the Trucker Path app.

Very disappointed with the Garmin RV 760. It shows street names in many cases rather than route numbers which makes it very confusing to follow a course. I complained to Garmin and they said that the change was made in order to accommodate 911 emergency calls and locations. I have also noticed more inaccuracies in this latest Garman GPS than any of the previous six units that I have owned. Many times the posted speed limits are different than what shows on the GPS. It has also routed me through some illogical plots . I would not buy another new Garman based on my disappointment with this new unit.
I thought the 760 was discontinued. I see an LMT 770 now
We purchased a Rand McNally RV GPS 7730 in July of this year from PPL Motor Homes in Houston (via internet) for $277.50. We usually plan our route using Good Sam Exclusive Trip Planner (if we have internet access) and upload it to the 7730. We have entered the RV dimensions and it provides a route that supposedly avoids all obstacles. It also provides alternative routes, includes traffic update capability, and can calculate or avoid tolls, if desired, among other features. We use it with the 2018 Rand McNally Large Scale Road Atlas. It is not our ideal GPS for RVs, but it seemed to be the best available at a reasonable price and we like the benefit of using it with the Good Sam Exclusive Trip Planner tool.
Don,
We get back to Vancouver on Wednesday evening. If you and Judith are available for lunch one day I can bring our Rand McNally/Camping World GPS and you can have a look at it.
Haven't used it in 5 months, so should be a good refresher for me.
Thanks all for your input. We have decided on the Garmin 660LMT. We'll give a review when we start using it next month.
Hello folks. We are looking for a GPS--just got a new RW and prefer to keep all the stuff on the roof on the roof
Are there any updates to this conversation? I am primarily looking for RV safe routes but other features may be helpful too
I've NEVER had success with a GPS. I've tried a couple of them. I hope someone has a recommendation....
What I HAVE had good luck with is the Rand McNally Truckers Map. There is a lot of good information about rules and regulations. There is also great info about bridge heights. They are available at most Truck Stops and at Barnes & Nobles. You can also get them on Amazon:
In the truck we use the Good Sam GPS, which is basically a Rand McNally unit loaded with Good Sam campground info. Very easy to use and with a 7" screen it is older eyes friendly.
Have completed about 30,000 miles all across Canada & USA and it only failed to know about 1 low bridge in small town New Brunswick.
As a Navigator, I always have a back-up system, so we also have the same paper map as GipC mentioned.
Just purchased the Motor Carriers atlas Gip mentioned above and some incredible info in it.
Great atlas to have with you!
I have not been able to find the normal car 2018 atlas with the same quality. I ordered one and the pages were so thin I returned it.
Any links for that one Gip?
Steve
Which one would you like?
The Mid Scale ($9.68):
Or the Large Scale ($15.09):
Both are laminate and spiral bound...
The good thing about these paper copies??? I don't have to hear: "You have missed your turn. Route Recalculation"
nor missing a road because it's not there...
