We have the RVND 7730 GPS and I'm less than thrilled with it. One thing I'm trying to do is find a better trip planner and be able to export the trip to the GPS. The 7730 uses Rand's online trip planning software called Trip Maker and an interface called Dock to move data from website to GPS. I can find no other option in the Dock interface to allow for 3rd party info to be imported. Am I missing something? Has anyone got a way to use a 3rd party (RV Trip Wizard) planner?
Thanx,
Jim

Jim - our first trip I used the Good Sam site to plan a route and uploaded the result, but didn't like the results. I believe we have the same model, just with a Good Sam name on the front.

Now, I just input the destination daily, select between the 2 routes it suggests. If I want to avoid known bottlenecks or visit a specific place, I edit the route by deleting road(s) and/or adding waypoints, either before departure or at any time along the route.

However, if you find a 3rd party one that works, I will probably give it a try.

Andy- The Good Sam unit is a re-label of the Rand unit with some minor software differences. One of the reasons I wanted the unit was to use it's customization features to plan a trip dragging a house behind me. What we've found is the the unit will warn us of a height restriction violation but only when approaching the obstruction and after you've committed. Would prefer a notice during the planning stage. Another thing we noticed is that you can plan a trip online and upload it to the GPS. We printed turn by turn directions at the same time to use as a backup. Unfortunately, 10 miles into the trip, the GPS changed the routing and never agreed with the printed directions for the rest of the 2000 mile loop. And my final discouragement was the units apparent affinity for backroads and alleys. Seems it will take you through the backwoods and briars if it can save 50 feet. We have a "shortest" route and a "fastest" route. What we need is a "smartest" route.

I gave the Rand Tablet 80 a chance, but ended up returning it because it wanted you to follow it's route and made it extremely difficult to modify. Plus it wasn't compatible with the GS trip maker. My excuse for returning it was because as soon as I put on my precription sun glasses I couldn't see a thing on the screen which makes it rather useless if you can't see the screen.
