We have placed a deposit on the 2015 1 owner Redwood Crossroads 38RE we want to purchase from a reputable dealer. We welcome any input concerning negotiation advice.

There are several online sources that will give you ball park figures. I believe the NADA has a section for RVs, plus you can look at big dealers online like RV Trader to see what they're selling similar units for.
In the end it's up to you if you think it's a good deal for you.

What is there asking price? I would say having a deposit already may make it harder to negotiation potential. If you get to a price your able to live with make sure the dealer sets it up and demos every part of the trailer. Make sure everything works 100% and you understand how to work everything. If this is your first experience towing a trailer of this size and your not sure ask them if its ok to take it around the block with a co-pilot. what do you have for a truck? Me and my wife love the 2015 RL38 we got a few years ago used , I have to fix a few things here and there but for the most part its a good trailer. I will say the brakes with 7000 lb axles are only marginal at best and I did have a suspension failed but the trailer has about 17,000 miles on it. Disk brake up grade is night and day different from drums brakes.

Thanks for very helpful advice. We look at the unit tomorrow. On the phone I spoke with sales person and business manager and made it clear that we were putting down a refundable deposit in order to have "first look" tomorrow and that we had not yet agreed on a price. The dealer has been great to work with. So far they have voluntarily without me negotiating come down in price to $3000 over NADA low retail.

I already have a truck that fits specs and will tow well. When we do purchase, a cross country truck driver who recently retired will go with us to pick up the vehicle we purchase and drive the unit the day we take it home. He is going to take me through a series of driving lessons. I have driven trailers but nothing this big. Thanks for the advice on the disk brakes. In your opinion should I ask the dealer to give me a price on this upgrade and include it in the deal if we make one?

In regards to the Disc Brakes, I have a couple of questions: How much do you plan to use the RW? Approx how many miles per year do you guess?
I ask because the Disc Brakes are great, but if you plan to put lots of mileage on the New to You RW, I would suggest you make an appointment with MORryde for the Independent Suspension plus Disc Brakes. While pricey it will take a lot of the stress out of traveling, both on you and the RW.
In either case, you can't go wrong with the Disc Brake upgrade.

Welcome to the ROG, just noted it is your first posts

If interested in Disc Brakes, please consider attending the rally, as we always have a vendor that offers special rally pricing on disc brake installs.

Hope all goes well with your negotiation and you have a successful PDI.

Also a reminder that due to numerous variables in options and also dealer service levels we don't discuss pricing.

Good Morning,

We had a 2016 38RL, so we are partial to those units.. When we had it, we were very pleased with the trailer and it was almost never at the dealer for anything to be repaired. ( ALMOST ).. It was by far the best trailer we ever owned ! then the neighbors tree changed that in 5 seconds.. 🙁

That ERA had some intermittent issues with the running gear, there was a small amount of people that experienced broken springs, and or broken shackles, failed wheel seals with grease on the brakes. Like stated above, IF you plan to tow this fine unit for any distance other than weekends, I would also suggest the Morryde IS and disc brake system.. By adding that system that will take OUT the possibility of any of those issues, while increasing the ride 10 fold... IF possible, plan to be at our rally in Indiana Morryde will usually run a RALLY SPECIAL to perform those upgrades.

If the $$$ will not work, just changing to the Morryde, sre4000 - HD shackles and wet bolts will be a nice upgrade and a lot less cash.

Also take a look at the pin box, IF it has the Tri-Glide, dump it, FAST.. add either the flex-air or the Morryde pinbox.. You will thank us...

GOOD LUCK with your decision ! ! Happy Camping, and Safe Travels
Joe

cost wise for disk brakes at 7000 or 8000 lb rating your at $1900 IN PARTS plus about $1000 labor. if your able to do the work your self figure about 15 hr for your first time installer and you will need a good amount of tools and jack stands. I had Morryde do my trailer this past spring < Like Joe D. stated it will cure all of the running gear possible future issues. My decision was based on the fact the brakes where going to cause a ACCIDENT and the repairs I had to do with molding and cabinets pulling free from the coach. I had seen the previous owner had done a repair on the bed room sliding doors to the closit and I had to do it again because of the screw pulling out of the frame. Bump roads will rattle these type trailers apart over time and the Morryde IS ride so much smoother and stable its also improved the ride in the truck. Well worth the money if your going to tow it. If your parking the trailer leave the spring and just put a set of good wet bolts from Morryde and a rubber or air center trungion. I had factory equal flex rubber trunnion before the up grade it the IS was a noticeable improvement. as for the rally price all you do is ask the sale dept about it and they will give you the show price / off season price. If you book now you can get it down before next season starts. I drove out on Saturday Am~sunday afternoon from MASS to Elkhart. Parked in there driveway (with power) stayed in the camper in the shop the one night and drove home Tuesday afternoon with disk brakes and new Morryde IS suspension. Other will tell you the same thing but You can literally leave the toaster and the coffee maker on the kitchen counter for 1000 miles and its 99% of the time going to be in the same spot when you stop moving. With my OEM spring set up it looked like a a bomb went off after 20 miles of towing. Cabinets doors would open ,everything on the counters would be on the floor. Cost wise I feel like OUCH that hurt but its a desion I was happy with after. Piece of mind knowing stop and go traffic is no problem...…. PRICELESS

Wish you the best and regardless of the brand of trailer disk brakes and morryde at 15000lb and more is a must have in my eyes. The newer trailers with 8000 lb axels have bigger brakes but still ride like chit so maybe that is a different story in the future.

Tires wise , Most owners look into 17.5" wheels and tires at some point . The Goodyear 614 has proven to be a good tire for up to about 16000~17000 lbs but your mirgin for over load is non-existant. Cheaper tires in the 16" range are proven to blow out in a short amount of time with this load. I did a 17.5" wheel and tire upgrade before the trip to Morryde but they can help with that also.

I hope my Rant / opinion is helpful and doesn't make you feel like " what am I getting myself into" . When my wife and I looked at going to a larger trailer from out 31' holiday rambler we wanted to do it once , I watched my Mom and Dad dump to much money on 3 used trailers and one new trailer. Wasting time and money isn't what we can afford to do. Now that the trailer is good for long drives we are planning trips to suit our capabilities not just local! in the next few years we hope to head west and do 2 week trips (still work full time) that will take us to Yellow stone and POI in the area.

Myself and Joe D. are just a few redwood owners towing with 1 ton single wheel trucks , in my case I am overweight on the rear axle. a Duel wheel truck is in my future but that's a story in it self! pack light , little or no water your close to OK.
