Could someone do me a favor? Around my pin box, there is some black trim. Could someone push on this and see if it flexes? I'm not sure if it screwed into the frame, or just into the fibreglass. Thanks.
Elliott,
On our 2013 it flexes and is only attached to the outer skin
I believe it is screwed to the frame using self tapping Tek Screws. Mine was loose and it took a fair amount of pressure to push it up and get the screw to drill into the frame and catch.
When I insulated the area under the safe in the front closet area (and closed an opening to the outside) I removed that piece of trim. I found that the two tek screws referred to by Tony that held the fiberglass underneath the trim to the frame were sitting on the trim, completely out of their holes. These two screws, along with the other two further back on the fiberglass (which were also loose), are the only screws holding the center section of the FG to the frame.
I put in an additional 2 tek screws and tightened the other 4, I also caulked the fiberglass to the frame under the trim (just as additional holding and insulation) before I put the trim back on.
I believe that the flex caused by going over bumps (combined with not enough fasteners) loosened off the screws.
Just as an edit, after re-reading Tony's post, on our unit the tek screws that Tony refers to on the trim piece only held the trim piece to the fiberglss, they were not drilled into the frame under the fiberglass. Not sure if this was a Redwood "miss" or not
I have 6 screws in my trim piece. The 2 front and 2 back screws just go into the fiberglass the 2 middle screws go into the frame
That is exactly what it is like on my Redwood. The flexing of the fibreglass bothers me.
That is exactly what it is like on my Redwood. The flexing of the fibreglass bothers me though. The screws holding it together are either cut off or broken off, and this is what I am concerned about
You may want to consider taking out those screws on the trim piece to see if any are drilled through into the steel frame (or are broken). An easier fix would be to put in a couple of additional screws though the trim into the steel underneath. To make life easy you can drill holes into the steel through the trim (same or slightly smaller diameter than the tek screw "drill")as the steel is thick and it would take a while for the screw to go through it (if at all!).
