So was curious , do you have to drain the water softner to regen the softner ? Or can you just pour the new salt in. Or has anyone put a regular house water softner in ?

I use an "On The Go" Double Standard portable water softner. With the amount of water we use and depending on our location, it will generally provide soft water for 3 to 5 weeks on a re-charge. I generally only use 1 lb. of non-iodized salt. It is best drain a pint of water prior to adding the salt.
Not sure with the on the go but my ABC waters unit has to have water drained out , unscrew the top add 3 lbs. of salt let it sit for a hour with it topped off with water then slowly flush off the salty water on the ground (not in the coach) . They suggest low flow , roughly a pencil size free flow for 15-20 mins or until its not salty tasting.
Agree that you have to drain some water out of the softener to allow enough space for the salt to get in at the top.
For anyone needing a resin replacement for those portable softeners, Al's RV in Yuma Arizona does it for $50. Cheaper than replacing the unit!
