Problem - Our Toshiba television would not communicate with the LG home theater receiver.
Solution - The television came equipped with a digital coaxial sound out put and the LG receiver had an optical sound input. The factory had installed an optical cord plugged into the LG receiver and stuffed into the coaxial connection of the television. Obviously the sound could not be played back through the home theater system. The solution is to provide a powered translator obtained at an audio store for about $27. The translator converts the digital coaxial signal to an optical signal and the sound through the home theater system is splendid. The attached photo shows the sound translator which comes with a small transformer that must be plugged into 120 volt supply.
Great. Now I know where to look. We had some issues at the end of last year before we put it away. I will make a copy and look at it when we take it out of storage.
For those keeping LG, this would be helpful...
But, Solution #2....ditch the LG equipment...We put in a Samsung 1000W system. It blows you away! We'll have to be careful with our neighbors. But it might help scare the bear away!
Of course, the sky is the limit. We just happened to be at Best Buy right after Christmas and found this $400 system for $220...
Samsung - 5 Series 1000W 5.1-Ch. 3D / Smart Blu-ray Home Theater System - Black

The rear speakers are wireless from the receiver to the communications box which makes it convenient for rear mounting. The rear box does require an electrical outlet.
