A couple of interesting articles about fishing...I have seen several articles pushing for a National License. This is an article from RVTravel.com addressing licensing:

In Texas, fishing is State Parks without a license is legal. I wonder how many other States have a similar program? At times, the State offers free fishing anywhere in Texas Waterways.

Here is a petition for a National Fishing License that Passport-America is circulating if you are interested.
I am all for a national License.... It would take a lot of guess work out..
Unfortunately, IF it becomes National ,I am afraid that could mean that the GOVT would get their hands deeper into it.. ??
IMHO I don't see it happening, states make ton of money on out state licenses. I bought a 1 day crabbing license in Washington state (which is like California, everything is expensive) this past summer for $25, maybe $35 & didn't include fishing of any kind, granted we had a blast followed by a huge crab feast that evening so it was well worth the $$$.

We spend a lot of time in Delaware.. I purchase a yearly license, I believe it is for crabbing, tidal water fishing.. any fresh water fishing is separate I think..
the 7 day is $14.00.. the year is $20.00
Maine would not go for that as our Inland fisheries and Wildlife department is supported only by license fees. They pay for stocking the lakes and streams. Interestingly, Salt Water fishing licenses are new in many coastal states. The Feds got involved and required, at a minimum, a registry of folks fishing in the ocean so they could keep track of the numbers of fish being caught. Some states they are free, others pretty expensive.
I don't think it would go smoothly, as I think each State has unique costs and requirements. It does get confusing though - I remember fishing in Lake Havasu and I had to have licenses for California, Arizona, and the Colorado River.
IF (AND THAT'S A BIG IF) the Government did not get out of hand with this program, it would be nice...1 License. 1 set of rules to follow. 1 time a year with an option for a lifetime pass...
I understand the points about money and how each State wants to "own" their own program. But, I thought we were/are the "United" States...Imagine if Federal Highways and military were left up to"States" to own those programs. There are just some things that should be centralized for consistency. The same with gun laws.
We're allowed to travel the States with 1 Drivers License, 1 Insurance...
No one can remember rules for all 50 States.

I am old enough to remember when many of the western states had border crossings. It was almost like traveling between different countries. They would stop vehicles for inspection to make sure you weren't transporting certain types of items primary related to fruits and maybe some vegetables. Fortunately, that no longer exists.
Of course also, I remember when you could cross back and forth between Canada and the U.S. with only a driver's license.
Next Guy, like me, you're going to remember when Sunoco 260 gas for our muscle cars was .$ 34 a gallon and we thought that was robbery ........ course back then we bought and sold th m for $1-2k and thought that was going to continue forever.
Who knew ??

Vaughn........haha! I never could afford one of those muscle cars. My first car was a '53 Chevy Bel Air Six with Powerglide transmission. Ran on regular grade of gas and in those days (mid-50's) there were gas wars in Huntington, Indiana where the price for regular gas went as low as $0.18 per gallon. :woohoo:
But, not to steal this thread, in Indiana once your age is over 64, you can purchase a one time Senior fishing license for life for $17.00. Wish that were true in every state.

California still has them. We passed through them at each border going through the Redwoods. Of course California has always felt they were unique.
Ah yes, the land of fruits and nuts......
