Well ~ as of May 10th we will be Fulltimers. B) 🙂

Since we will be setup in upstate New York on the Erie Canal for 6 months, I'd like suggestions on a good water filtration system that is portable. I'm thinking something that can sit by the coach and then store in the gen compartment when traveling. I don't want/need to get into a fancy, involved reverse osmosis system or something like that.

Any suggestions ??

Vaughan,

In addition to the internal filter, on the supply hose I use a quality inline filter from any RV parts store/Walmart and a Watts RV pro-1000 water softener. The water softener I have to regenerate with regular table salt about every month to 3 months depending on water hardness. The inline filter lasts from 3 to 6 months, I change it when we get a noticeable reduction in volume. The internal filter I change once per year.

With the double filter and softener I also use a residential pressure reducer rather than the RV type to maintain better volume.

Results are close to the RO System we have at home.

Thanks Andy ~ I kind of remember seeing your setup when we were at the Rally.
Would you happen to have a picture of it ?

Vaughan,

The coach is currently in storage across the Line in Lynden, so tough to take some photos. I'll check through my photos to see if I have any on that side of the coach.

Vaughan,

What I do is use a two filter system. As it happens I got the filter containers and stands from a vender at the FROG when we did a day trip to see it a couple years back during the Redwood rally. Since I can't put the stands into the ground when its not dirt I built a stand from PVC. I have a pressure regulator on the input side and use nice brass quick connects I picked up in Canada to make it fast to setup and tear down. Probably not useful to you if you are not moving for 6 months.

I like to use a pretty cheap paper filter for the first stage to get the big debris out, which I change once a month. The second stage I've settled on using the High Flow 5 Micron filter from Campco to clean it up more. I change it every 3 months. Really need the High flow option otherwise the water pressure in the show is really compromised.

For drinking water we run the campground water (already filtered twice) through a Berkey Filter. It really does purify the water for drinking, ice and cooking. It does what it says and the filters get cleaned like every other month don't need to be replaced but every couple of years. Much better than the Brita or Zero water filters. Travels great in the kitchen sink.

The system seems to work well for general use although I agree in many parks I'd benefit from a water softener like what Andy has. Thing is we move a lot and I really don't have anywhere to carry it.

Hope this helps.

I took out the internal filter behind the basement wall as I always flooded the area when replacing filters (and the whole unit turned when I put the filter wrench on it, only one screw held the assembly to the roof of the basement).

I posted my modification, an external whole house filter with a carbon filter that catches debris and rust from the campground systems. I also connect up a water softener after the filter as where we are in the south west the mineral content is very heavy, enough that the sacrificial anode on the water heater disappears in one winter season if I don't use a softener.

We have the charcoal filter from CHIEFWATERS.com located in Florida. easy to use lifetime warranty, just needs to be back flushed every 30 days.
As others have stated we use the campo throwaway filter, with a commercial grade pressure regulator, took out the basement filter. Cost is high but never need another one, think $600.00 USA.

WOW! For $600 I can buy filter cartridges for about 10 years for for both filters, but glad it works for you.
