Hi all - need opinions, especially from you westerners with experience. We are currently in Pierre SD on top of a ridge. Beautiful view but totally exposed. Forecast for late tonight with the storm is winds of 55 mph. Is this something doable or should we consider moving to another campground ?

Don't want to endanger our home !!

I can say it won't be fun! We were just west of Amarillo 2-3 years ago in May with nothing west of us to block the wind except a couple barbed wire fences, sustained winds 40+/- day/night with 60-70 mph gusts & 7-8 days that we couldn't see our sons house 20' away due to the dust. Most days we pulled in the slides & left for the day. If your nose/tail to the wind, like the sailor in you would do, you should be fine, if broadside MOVE. Don't remember if you have slide toppers, but if so you'll definitely want the slides in & with the slides out they will breath in/out which looks/feels eery.
Good luck, let us know how you make out!

Suggest you travel west on 90 to Buffalo, WY, then west on 16. You will have the most amazing ride across the Big Horn Mountains on beautiful roads. Then north on 20 and west on 14 to Cody. Do allow two days at the Wild Bill Cody museum in Cody!

For a great experience you might consider exiting 90 at exit 131. See the Minute Man Missile National site directly at the exit. Then head south on the scenic by-pass route through Badlands National Park. I believe it is hghwy 240 which puts you back on 90 at exit 110. You'll marvel at the scenery and the road is very doable in a Redwood.

Vaughan,

We have experienced 45 to 50kts, with higher gusts, but never completely exposed at the top of a ridge. I'm with Danny, if you're not hove to, I would probably move.

Vaughan,

With Blizzard conditions and winds of 50+ mph, I would move.... I know this is somewhat late to answer, but hopefully you did the right thing...

That is why these have wheels under them, to roll down the road to a better spot..

If you chose to stay, Good Luck...

Joe

About 2 years ago, we were at Copper Breaks State Park in Northern Central Texas (near Childress)....A storm blew up out of nowhere and the winds hit us broad side at 70 to 75 mph per the local weather channel. We were up on top of the hill. It was a white knuckle moment for sure.

One piece of advice if you ride it out...If you know which way the winds are coming from, pull the opposite slide in. That will move the center of gravity more toward the windward side. Add your own weight against the windward side as well. It can't hurt. You need all the weight you can against the wind. Make sure your water tanks are full and fill the gray tanks if you can. That would add another 1250 lbs or so. Obviously, if the wind is head or rear on, this reduces the concern. The best choice is to stay at the campground storm shelter (if they have one). I also like some of the other suggestions to bail and find better weather!

I've often wondered how much wind that the RV could take...Reports have been at 90 mph under the right conditions. I don't think that would be white knuckles...I'd be a ghost afterward!

Well - we stayed in place. Not really any other good places to go. So far, so good. Talked to Brad and took his advice from many years in Colorado. Have the rear stabilizers down, all of the leveler down solidly and also hooked up to the truck. We're able to take the wind almost head-on and so far very little rocking in the coach. Wind is currently 35-45 gusting to 50-55 and snow going sideways Visibility about 100'. Guess this is a normal South Dakota spring !! Lol

We're good, just should be. But entertaining getting down the ridge come Tuesday or so.
