Well....More bureaucracy...
One of our family members has decided to get their driver's license (finally)...
Spent last weekend in Driver's Ed getting the written out of the way.
Went to the DMV today to get the learner's permit. The DMV states that they can't issue a permit (or regular) license since they are staying in the RV with us. We "officially" do not have the documents to "prove" our residency. All of our bills go to the PO Box. We pay month-to-month for a lot space with no contracts. We can't "prove" we live here. What are we supposed to do? Go BUY a piece of property to prove we have residency? Having a piece of property proves absolutely nothing!
I asked about "us" (me and the beloved spouse) since we sold the house and all assets. They stated they didn't care about us registering a PO Box since we already HAVE a license. But since they didn't, they needed proof.
What the _ _ _ _ ??? (pick a favorite)
How stupid can our governments get?
Even IF we have a house, who says we live there?
Last few posts have been a bit Anti-Government or government bashing between this one and insurance.
What's the difference between the RV and an apartment?
The difference is a physical address - they have to have some indication of your physical domicile - where you are taxed, where you vote from, etc. That's why PO boxes won't work, but mail services will. We chose to go with a UPS store, which does give us a physical address so no problems with licensing, voting, or paying our personal property taxes . Considering a change to Florida.

Ok...But I ask what is the difference between a UPS box and a post office box? In either case, no one is physically there. Both have physical addresses. I'm not opposed in setting up a UPS box but that is a 30 minute drive from here. I pay no taxes over there at all.
I just wonder now how we'll register to vote?
Are we now aliens in our own country?
Later on today, we think we may have found a way to get this done. We'll have to inconvenience the landlord...She will have to sign an affidavit (in person at the DMV). What good does that do? We could move the next day.
Full-timing sure has it's challenges...
Last few posts have been a bit Anti-Government or government bashing between this one and insurance.
Simply pointing out what no one tells you about full-timing.
This is a lifestyle that is not going away anytime soon. If you can recommend an advocacy group for me to redirect this to, I would appreciate it. There are some who watch these posts and they may be considering full-timing. They need to hear what a challenge its going to be.
I can write my Congressman but alone, it would do no good. If others understand the "restrictions" being placed on full-timers, they may think twice about buying an RV for this purpose. Therefore less sales. With less sales...The RV industry may get involved (maybe not).
I just remember what it means to live free in America. Its just going away a little at a time...
I like the idea of living in our RV and I don't want it going away.
Sorry if it offends...I'm just getting tired and frustrated with it. But this is an RV related topic.
I know it seems crazy, but just like UPS will only deliver to a physicsal address, the government has to know the location you consider home. While we are in Florida for 5 months, we purchased a car to run around and was able to get a Florida tag based on the physical address. Lots of full timers use an address of a child or friend - we chose the UPS store because it is a physical address and they forward our mail every week. Yes, full-timing has its challenges but they come no where close to the benefits so far.

Where would they forward your UPS mail?
Please don't tell me that they forward to your PO Box...
And hurrah for the "benefits"...
No, they forward to wherever we tell them to. Always a physical address. We are here in Florida for five months with a physical address. We'll be in West Yellowstone for the summer with a physical address. And as we travel we plan ahead with an address to forward to if necessary. So far it has worked great for us! The only negative is that our Arkansas UPS address is in a county with fairly high taxes for our annual personal property tax. That's what I would like to get away from.

We also use UPS mail service & last winter they forwarded our mail to a PO box. You can become an Escapee & have a physical Texas address.
My DW & I just flew to DFW to renew her drivers license, had to appear in person this time, & had no problem with our address. She was also told that after June you will be able to renew any where in the state not just the county you're registered in.
There are a few challenges to over come fulltiming, but wouldn't want to change anytime soon.
Also fortunately we have the freedom of speech!

We had a similar issue. In Colorado, after 65 years old your drivers license has to be renewed in person. George went to DMV to get the new license and didn't know he couldn't use the PO Box. He gave them our PO Box and when they would not renew he gave them our daughters address. We didn't know we needed to keep our full-timing a secret. SO, when George clarified they wouldn't give him a drivers license because we didn't LIVE at the street address (our daughters).
In the end he had to get his drivers license with the campground address. We took in our payment receipt, which they used as resident proof. They knew we are only at this place for 3 weeks. They would only accept the physical address we were currently. BTW we get NO mail at the campground.
So, he got his drivers license with the campground address. Then we went online and changed the address to our PO Box. In 5 years we will have to go through this again.

I haven't tried to have UPS deliver to our PO Box, however, we regularly have UPS sent to "General Delivery". Amazon uses UPS, we have our packages delivered to whatever General Delivery post office is appropriate.
Also, we use UPS for medicine delivery. Kaiser will not mail prescriptions out of state. So our prescriptions are sent to a Colorado address and then they put them in a UPS box and send them to us wherever we are. US Postal will not "legally" mail prescription drugs. UPS will ship anything except narcotics.
