Emergency Telephone Number - Poison Control / Snake Bites and More
You may want to put this telephone number in your cell phone directory...It could come in handy in an emergency one day....
National Poison Control Center: 1 800 222-1222. It will automatically connect to the nearest State Center.
We like to hike in the National/State Parks. If someone gets snake bit, they will dispatch the appropriate anti-venom to the hospital of treatment.

Thanks GipC -
Just hope in a situation where I need this I'll have the clear head to remember I have it and I have at least 1 bar to make the call.
Be safe!

Same for us....But we were at Palo Duro Canyon last weekend (Just South of Amarillo, Texas). Couldn't help but notice all of the very likely places that a snake could have been laying...
Then, I got to think'n about the Javelins, Bobcats and Mountain Lions in the area...But all I had to worry about there was whether or not I could outrun the rest of the party 😉 Not really...
Seriously though...I think I'll invest in some bear spray. That might have come in handy and its not illegal (I don't think). It might work on snakes or it might really tick them off.
As for the canyon itself, the bad part about being IN the canyon is that cell phone service is "0". We had the portable 2-way radios with us. That might have been beneficial if we would have known the Ranger Station frequencies (if they have one).
What an awesome place to camp though. The road down is a bit steep at 10%. There are a couple of turns that are pretty sharp. You gotta have good brakes and a strong stomach. I bought blinders for the DW. Have to admit though...I ain't scared of nothing, but this even made me a bit quezy...It's about 850 to 1000 feet deep. There is 1 truly great campground with 50A service. ALL spaces would fit a Redwood. There are 2 (possibly 3) other campgrounds inside the canyon that would also provide space.
More pics...
Went down into the canyon in June while staying in Amarillo. No way we'd take the Redwood down those switchbacks! You are much braver than us Greg!

You should have seen some of the other rigs at the bottom...They had electric brakes. I would have NEVER attempted a grade like that without discs...
Nice! I have some work in Amarillo coming up in Oct - I may have to sneak down there and take a look. I'll take the toad. Thought Amarillo would be boring.
They advertise it as 2nd only to the Grand Canyon. If there in the summer go to the outdoor musical "Texas" in the canyon, awesome show, think it's from Memorial day to whenever schools start, about Labor day.
The "Cadillac Ranch" just west of town was an awesome sight when we were young as they were recognizable Cadillacs, but now to me it's just junk sticking out of ground welcoming graffiti, but there's always a crowd there regardless of the weather.
Also the "Big Texan" steakhouse is worth a stop, food is good but a bit pricey. If real hungry try the 72 ounce steak with all the trimmings, if eaten in an hour it's free.
If you're into off roading you can go north on 287 about 20 miles & drive up/down the Canadian river, get a permit 1st, but it's lots if muddy/sandy fun.

Maybe these things will keep you busy while you are there...
Happy Business Trip!
You didn't take this pic did you? That's what the Cadillac Ranch looked like when we were young, not now.

Holy buckets - this will turn into a vacation!
I could definitely do the steakhouse - all the mansion, train, plane, and car museums, (not a real horse fan) but I better hold off on off-road if going by myself. Just my luck I'd get stuck and not a tree in site to winch from.
Gpc, where was that auto museum where the cars were wheels down? Love the fin cars!! Hope to have a few in the future.
That's how I remember seeing pics of the Cadillac ranch, but will all the graffiti now they don't seem real artistic anymore. I agree with you, probably not worth the trip there.
