Take your time. This is one of the best rides in North America.
This is our home. We live on 101 in Windsor, CA and just went to Winchester Bay, Or for crabbing for a week. Despite some storm damage and one lane closures, 101 is just fine. Hwy 1 is not for RV's for the most part. 101 is beautiful and worth the drive. We are just now coming down I-5, stopping at Durango RV park in Redbuff.
If you're wanting to visit SF, I have some recommendations for you. There are parts of the City that I wouldn't want to tow but I go through it frequently. Not a lot of RV parks nearby, but depending on your time there are some options.
Let me know and I'll be glad to give you a few ideas.
Ken
Thank you for all the help u have given us. We are in Astoria/Fort Stevens till Thursday. Drizzly today next 2 days beautiful. Thanks again.
Allen and Kim
Ken, we are interested in visiting SF. Someone mentioned taking a "tour". That might be of interest to me and not have to deal with traffic. Rather stay outside of the city with the RV. Jim and Mary mentioned Marin as one choice don't want to be a pest just asking a lot of questions.
We have also driven Hwy 101 many times between the Bay area and Astoria. We have completed the entire Oregon Coast with the Redwood, both Northbound and Southbound. There are a couple of twisty sections and a low tunnel, but nothing to worry about.
As Terry mentioned, take your time, it is spectacular.
Departing Oregon, stay on Hwy 101, do NOT venture over to the Pacific Coast Hwy
On our trips to Crescent City, CA, we travel down I-5 to Grants Pass, OR, and then take US 199 from there to Crescent City. A great park on I-5 that Andy mentioned is 7 Feathers Casino at Canyonville, OR one of the two or three best RV parks we've stayed at in the entire country. Then we continued on US 101 from Crescent City all the way down to Corte Madera, where we stayed at Marin RV Park.
Allen & Kim,
We have stayed at the following parks:
Petaluma KOA, nice park, has seasonal tours to SF, check to see if still running. Expensive, not that close to SF
San Fransisco RV park, Pacifica, CA very close to SF. Easy to take BART into the city. Expensive, tight spaces
Candlestick RV Park, SF. lousy neighborhood, enter from the south only. Stayed there when I had to be in the City...there were no other options. It's OK but wouldn't be my choice.
Alameda County Fair RV Park. Perhaps the nicest of the parks, in the east bay, not that close to SF but BART is near by
I have not stayed at the Marin RV park in Corte Madera. Close to the city and a nice ferry ride to SF.
Hope that gives you a few ideas.
Ken
I must apologize, you said 101 & I'm thinking hwy 1, forget what I said.

Not a problem Danny. I appreciate all comments so we can learn from others.
To all from the ROG who responded to our request taking Hwy 101 from Astoria to San Francisco, I want to thank each of you. We arrived in Petaluma CA today. It was a awesome trip. We have so many photos, and shared on FB with our friends that I think they got tired of seeing all the Beauty.
We stayed at the Redwood RV park and fulfilled my thought of taking our Redwood to see the Redwoods.
Hanging out here at the KOA in Petaluma and taking the SF Tour on Monday. Could not get in to Marin due to the Fleet Week in SF. Everything booked up.
So, thanks again for all your help. We are 2,250 Miles from home in Indiana and must start planning our trip home beginning next week.
Safe travels to you all
Kim, Allen, and Yogi Bear.
We stayed at the Redwood RV park ourselves last year! Nice park. Also Benbow KOA further south in the Redwoods CA that is pure class.
Glad you made it safe & sound!
