Why is an F450 "apples to apples to the 3500's?
The GVWR dictates which class a truck is assigned.
About 2 or 3 years ago Ford reduced the GVWR of the F450 to 14,000lbs. This resulted in the F450 being dropped from Class 4 to Class 3. Max GVWR for class 3 is 14,000.
Therefore, being assigned to Class 3, the F450 is now considered an enhanced F350.

Well - the F450 compared to the F350 has a wider track, shorter turning radius and a much higher GCWR. Depending on the year it also has 19.5 wheels and tires rather than 17". Again, depending on the year, it carries a much higher GVWR which can be a problem in some states both for registration and also for the class of driver license needed. If you look under the bed of a F450 the rear axle will do justice to a medium duty truck and is not the same as a 350.
A Ram 3500 with all the tow upgrades would be a close comparison but the so would a 350 with the Max Tow package. I'm not sure however, if the Max Tow in the F350 gives you the huge rear axle.
Where Ford has hurt themselves on the 450 is with the 14K GVWR same as the 350, yet the 450 is an overall heavier truck, thus actually reducing it's cargo capacity.
