We own a 2016 GMC Sierra truck, which we use to tow our 39 MB Redwood. Recently while traveling between VA and FL, we encountered a problem at Pilot/Flying J, as well as, Loves, and wanted to see if anyone else has had the same problem. Our RV and truck measure over 60' long and we have difficulty with using the pumps in front of the store at the truck stops, so we use the diesel truck lanes. Recently, we were not able to get fuel because the pump nozzle would not fit into the fuel tank opening. Any suggestions on how we can modify our fuel tank opening?

Most of the truck stops have the larger, high capacity diesel nozzles. They work on our F350.

Not sure you want to modify the filler without also addressing the tank vent. These nozzles fill the tank much faster, so you must be capable of venting the displaced air.

We have not had a problem fitting the larger nozzles at the truck side of the pilot or flying J into the filler opening of our 2013 GMC Duramax. We have had a problem using bio diesel where our truck fuel consumption increases by about 20% and the engine loses power. When switching back to normal diesel the fuel consumption goes back to normal and the power increases.

Are you talking about the outside lane of the tractor/trailer diesel pull through lanes?

We have a 2014 RAM. We have no issues with the fuel. I also have an issue with the DEF. We have gone to filling a reserve jug of DEF. I fill the jug at the pump and then put it into the tank from the jug.

We only go to the truck stops and always use the trucker pumps. We get in, fill the tank and then get out. We have never had an issue or even a look. I think our rigs are big enough the truckers can see why we are there.

We determine which truck stop to use by the # of truck parking spots. That will tell me the basic size of the truck stop, so it will be easier to maneuver around and also there are plenty of spaces and pumps for the truckers.

We also have not run into any problems with both our trucks with the large nozzle but I have to say I hate pulling in for fuel sometimes if it's busy. Also have to go in to pay so I fixed that problem last year by adding another tank so we now have 109 gallons on board. I usually only fuel up when unhooked now unless I see a super easy one. I don't regret adding the tank and love it. The DEF, I just keep a box or two in the truck and never use the pump.

Pilot/Flying J are just about the only fuel stops we use when traveling. Have never had any issue with the nozzle.
We have the GoodSam/Pilot RV Plus Card, starts the pump without going inside and because we're GS Life members gives us 8 cents off the cash price.
We pull in, insert our card, enter our access code, follow the pump menu, fuel, right down the amount and leave. Quick in and out.

I was a truck driver I had my own company, everyone needs to get fuel some where when they are pulling large rigs. The only thing that did aggravate me was when the driver finished fuelling their rig they wouldn't pull up away from the pumps far enough for me to pull up to refuel while the were inside paying. Time is money in and out in 15 minutes.

mhs4771 thumbs up that is the best way to do it, most RVers don't know that they can apply for a fuel card with the truck stops. it is basically a fuel debit card and gives you fuel points back. I have 5 fuel cards and never leave home with out them. You can monitor the truck stop fuel prices on line state by state for the best prices.

Steve - does your Atta tank have a fuel hose fitting on the bottom or side near the bottom ? I'm looking at a RDS tank and waiting for a call back from them to see if they make a version like Atta for the Roll n Lock. The RDS tank is quite a bit less expensive and uses a gravity fill into the filler neck rather than a pump and gauge and all the hardware. If they don't make a version for the cover, then I'll get the Atta but would pr for not to have to deal with the $$ and hassle of the pump.

I did not know that, my GMC has no problem with the large nozzle but good to know about the smaller nozzle on the outside lane.

I prefer the truck lanes over the rv lanes as the rv lanes are usually easy in & difficult to get out especially when some auto thinks the exit is a parking slot. Pull in, DW goes in to pay (she hates that part), fill up (no problem with fat nozzle),move forward to go inside, good to go. Typically try to avoid truck stops all together due to much higher prices compared to other places off the highway, stop for the day, unhook, find fuel in town, & save 20-30+ cents per gallon.
