Just passing on...

The dealership where I bought my truck told me that if I wanted to avoid problems, stay away from regular gas stations as the Diesel fuel may sit in their tanks for over 6 months at a time. They stated that the DEF on the shelf can also be there for long periods of time. In both cases, the longer it sits on the shelf, the more it degrades or gets contaminated.

They encouraged me to stay with truck stops as they regularly go through the products much faster.

I only have 43,000 miles but can say that there are no problems so far.

As for the DEF, they stated that the DEF is a corrosive. So if you get it on the vehicle, it needs to be washed off right away. Don't let it sit there too long.

I agree that you should go to a station that moves fuel but you don't have to stop at the truck stops to do that. I almost always avoid truck stops because they are about 20 cents per gallon (or more) expensive than "in town" stations and I prefer to fuel up without the RW attached, I find it faster and more convenient than the fuel stops. In terms of fuel turnover, Gas Buddy has taken care of that, I find that lower price stations turn over fuel quickly, not a concern for me.

What happens when DEF is put in FUEL tank??????
Tom G. a friend of mine just had to add 2.5 gallons of DEF into his aftermarket 50 gallon replacement tank on the 2013 F250.
Called the local dealer and was assured a call-back shortly. Then called me about something else, and told me what happened.
Discussion was short, told him to call a shop owner friend of mine. (The truck was never started, he has that much common knowledge). Shop owner wanted to just pump tank, as he had never had job like that to do. me being kinda dumb told him NO to pull the tank and clean it, due to the problems with water in the DEF.
OK to finish the story and make it short!!!! Pulled the tank the reaction caused the DEF to JELL up on the bottom of tank, and has to use a de-greaser and gasoline to clean the mess out and seam clean/pressure wash 250psig. tank is clean, pick up replaced (too much gum to reuse). total cost including fuel replacement, towing and shop fees $1200.00. Better than 15grand for a new fuel system.
P.S. Ford dealer called him back 3 days later told him not to start the truck (it was already in friends shop).

If it IS started - its new engine time. Ford dealer where I bought mine had a truck in the last time I was there for service. The Service Manager that I've become friendly with walked over and we were talking about my truck and how the fulltime life was going. I motioned over to the other truck that had the cab off and the engine out and asked what happened .
He said they were borderline whether the truck was going to be totaled but because it was so new, the insurance company wanted it fixed. He wasn't happy because in his words "I'm gonna live with this thing forever".
2016 F450 Dually - son of owner took his family camping and borrowed rig from Dad. Stopped at Flying J and promptly put 30 gals of DEF in tank and then started it. He pulled forward to go pay for fuel, left truck running with family in it. Truck lasted about 5 minutes till the DEF made it past the injectors. Engine shut down. The son then tried to start it repeatedly. A trucker who was there thought what might have haened, opened the fuel cap and smell d DEF and told him he wasn't going anywhere.

The dealer is installing a complete new engine, didn't even want to think about rebuilding, and cleaning all the fuel system and replacing as needed. He said his initial estimate to the insurance company was north of $32k and was open as he wasn't sure where they would wind up.

There were a few over on RV.NET that it happened to.. I believe the last one was north of $13K.. Like Vaughan said, they need to remove the entire cab to replace the engine..

IF it was not started, a total flush was done, several times and that was good enough to keep it isolated..

DEF is 68% water, 32% urea, not a good diesel alternative. That's GMs thinking when putting the DEF fill port in such an awkward spot.
Another thing to remember, just because the pump has a green or yellow nozzle does not guarantee it's a diesel nozzle, check the pump before starting, I know some that have filled their diesel with gasoline because "it had a green nozzle".

Guilty as charged. When we were traveling to the 2014 Redwood Rally, we had to fuel up on the Indiana turnpike and the BP station had green nozzles for their gas pumps. I caught myself before I put any into the truck, and I had a brand new dually with less than 300 miles on it. I would have been sick if I hadn't caught my mistake.

Yes, that would be me 🙂
I returned the green nozzle and noticed the yellow - and only then did I realize what I had just done. Premium gas no less!
Truck had less than 3,000 miles on it. What a way to start a vacation. I didn't even turn the key but still cost me $900 at Ford + tow.
