Hey All,
We're just looking ahead for a trip to Alaska. I've asked a few questions about the Canadian Border crossing and such. But has anyone been to Denali Nat'l Park and actually stayed in the park?
Right now, the reservations are wide open for 2018 so I'll just watch and see when things start filling up. We're planning a trip there for 2019. The website discusses rates for 40' and under. Of course, we're at 42'. Surely a 42' will fit?
What about the train? Has anyone taken that train ride? If you did, what did you do with your RV? Is there are storage place available somewhere?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Hi GipC, we were in the area a few years ago.
Maybe we didn't spend enough time in the park to figure it out, we could only go 11 miles in a private vehicle to explore. We stayed at a nearby RV park, we also stayed at Talkeetna in an RV park just beside the rail line, the train stops there, it's the one that takes you into Denali.
Our blog shows some pictures and RV park details, the link is below. You have to go down halfway through the page to find Denali. There are other pages that year (listed at the top of the page) showing other Alaska stuff.
Al,
I enjoyed your blog. It brought back many memories. We did pretty much the same trip on the inland part of a cruise, starting in Fairbanks. Our tour took us both by train and bus back to Anchorage to board the ship, with several stops along the way.
We did the Denali tour. The first 2-3 hours were as you described, very unimpressive.
Then things turned on a dime. It started with a mama bear and her cubs stopping us and checking out the bus. Then the mountain sheep, carabou, moose and more. The wildlife deep in the park was amazing.
It helped too that the clouds lifted, sun came out and the views were spectacular. Next day, I took a plane ride and landed on a glacier. The flight around the mountain was breathtaking.
I’m glad DW insisted on the tour. I too wouldn’t have invested the time & $ for an all day ride on a school bus, but in retrospect, it was worth every dime.

We didn't get to Denali - wish we had. We stayed in Girdwood south of Anchorage for a few days before a Cruise and took a helicopter flight out to the glaciers including landing. Best money we spent, still talk about it. Tracy asked me halfway through flight what it would cost to get a rotary wing rating on my licens - I laughed and said "cubic dollars". Martin our pilot laughed and agreed but said it was worth it. If I were younger ........
Check back with me in July. We have 3 nights scheduled there.
