Has anyone towed their RW on US 199 out of Crescent City connecting to I-5 at Grants Pass? The road looks good on a map, but I want to be sure.
Dave,
Can't help with US 199, as it is one we haven't tried.
Not sure where you are headed, but when we have the time, we tend to favour US 101 over I-5, joining it southbound at Olympia and northbound at San Francisco. We have driven the entire Oregon Coast in both directions with no issues. Just watch your speed.
One to avoid on the CA coast is US 1, especially the section from Leggett to the coast.
In Oregon, we have used I-5, US 101 and US 97 without any issues.

I answered on the other forum, but Crescent City is one of our favorite; Redwood RV Park just north of Crescent City (near Pelican Bay State Prison). The road is very good except for the last 10 miles east of Crescent City. It's a little narrow and windy, but we've done that drive half a dozen times.
No problem with a Redwood. Go for it.
Thanks and we will be coming down 101 from Portland. We could take it from Seattle so what do you think? Once we get to Crescent City and spend a few days in Redwood we are headed back north on US 199 to Grants Pass and up I-5 to I 84 and the Columbia River area and then east on to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. I can use all the input I can get......
101 does not go thru Portland or Seattle, and you do not want to travel I-5 thru either city. Get on 101 and take it from Port Angeles all the way to Crescent City. It's a great road all the way.( I live here.)
How can I get on 101 from Vancouver?
I will be heading south from Vancouver coming from Banff
South on I-5 from the border. Then WA 20 west to Whidbey Island to Coupeville. Take the ferry across the Sound to Port Townsend. Then get on US 101 either south bound along Hood Canal or west bound around the Olympic Peninsula (recommended). Then cross the Columbia River directly into Astoria. Several good RV parks in Anacortes or Deception Pass State Park to break up the journey.
Can I take my RW on the ferry?
Of course! Just be sure to get a Rez on WA State Ferries web site.
From Vancouver you have 4 choices for border crossings. I have used all 4, except the Truck Crossing at 176th Street (BC Hwy 15). We are not permitted to use the truck lines and the car booths have a tight curve into the booths. My preference is BC Hwy 13 (264th St) at Aldergrove. Only open 08:00 to midnight, but they have a separate Bus/Semi/RV line, which is easy access.
Across the border, it is straight down Guide Meridian and join I-5 at Bellingham. Having worked on ferries, I tend to avoid them, so I continue on I-5, taking I-405 just North of Seattle (Lynwood). I-405 has toll lanes now, but I stick to the regular lanes and never have problems. It rejoins I-5 in vicinity of Seatac airport.
I continue south on I-5 to Olympia, taking US 101 towards Aberdeen. I use Hwy 8, 12 and 107 to pick up Hwy 101 just south of Aberdeen.
Lots of excellent campgrounds on the coast
- Cannon Beach RV Resort, some sites are tight
- Florence, Woahink RV Resort (backs right onto dunes)
- Bandon, Bandon by the Sea RV Park (south of town, avoid ones in town)
- Gold Beach, Turtle Rock Resort
- Brooking, Beachfront RV Park (basic, but day viewing of whales)
That's a quick summary of some of the Oregon parks we have used
Very nice casino rv park in Coos Bay , if I recall it's "The Mill".

Currently rvless!!
I would pay the ferry fare to cross the Pugrt Sound any day rather than drive I -5 through Seattle and Tacoma. There are 90 miles of heavy traffic and/or gridlock to get between Everett Washington and Olympia. Especially in summer with tourist traffic!

You need to get up a little earlier in the morning to go through
