I have what seems to be fairly common problems with the A/C in our living/kitchen area not cooling properly when the RV is in full sun. I have read tons of comments on this forum as to items to check and fix. So first I removed several of the A/C supply vents only to find that the factory had trimmed them to the proper height. I checked the rest without removing them. Second, I removed both of the return air filter covers to look in the ducts. Those pictures are attached. I noticed that they didn't seal the side of the duct right at the intake vent and I can see a roof truss on either side with just some foil hanging down (same foil as you see on the bottom of the duct which appears to be poorly installed). It appears that they may have intended to route wire through that area as there is a hole in the truss that appears designed for a wire/cable run. I apparently didn't get a picture of the trusses, but I will get some tomorrow or the next day. I should also note that the top of the return air duct was quite hot to the touch so my guess is that there is very little if any insulation between it and the roof decking.
Early next week I intend to pull the plastic A/C cover after we get back home from a quick outing. What do I need to remove to be able to see/access the "divider" between the supply side and the return side. Does anyone have pictures of what I should see or be looking for? Both of our units are Airxcel Coleman Mach A/C/Heat pumps.
Any suggestions/ideas/advice are greatly appreciated.
I no longer have my pictures of when I did mine. However I can tell you that when You remove the AC cover it is very obvious. Buy some Silver Aluminum Duct tape. Also check your front cap that it is insulated. And then insulate it some more. When I see your pic's this makes me mad!!! What would it cost to fix these items ?? Insulation in the front cap, Trim the AC vents to the right length? seal off the Return from the supply. And design the supply ducts so they do not block the return air ducts. Totally uncalled for!! in my opinion.
I have several pics posted on this forum. You will have to remove the cover and remove the A/C to do this right. When I get home later this afternoon, I can repost if someone doesn't do it before then. It will take you about 2-3 hours. Pick the early morning. I HAD to do it in a State Park on a 100 degree day....
Maybe this will help:
Although there is a lot of good info here, the last slide shows the foam inserts at Part #17 (Just to the right. Use a better quality foam and you be happier with the results. It needs to be able to compress when you set the unit down on top of the foam.
While you have it open, like I said, use the 3M tapes for extreme hot and cold temps that have high adhesion rates. They stick much better.
