Good Morning...

Your question needs a bit more clarification...

Is the smell inside your RV or outside the RV?

If inside the RV:

We've been full time for about 1.5 years now. We're still learning as we go. We use (2) of these tablets each time we've emptied the tank.

We've tried a few of the other brands. We have not found anything better thus far. And they are available at Walmart, Amazon and others for $11 or so. every once in a while, we get those $10 to $25 coupons from Camping World...Then we get a pack or 2 for free.

If you have a continuous smell inside the RV, there is a chance that the toilet seal is not completely sealing any more. It may due for a change out or thorough cleaning. Urine contains calcium's and so does hard water. After a while, these deposits will build up on surfaces. A smell will develop inside the bowl area. It can also leave small openings where the flapper is supposed to seal off the gases.

Here is an excellent article that may help:

https://axleaddict.com/rvs/How-to-Make-Your-RVs-Black-Water-Tank-Smell-Better

I clean/flush the tanks about every third dump or so using a tank wand in the beginning.

Fill the tank completely full and then pull the dump handle. If you have a clear fitting on the hose, you will see the change at each flush. If you can drive the down the road prior to dumping, that will also loosen up the solids further for a more "liquid" dump.

We routinely clean the bowl are to prevent deposits. IF YOU ARE ON A SEPTIC SYSTEM, be careful about what products you use. RV septic tanks have live "critters" in the tanks to eat away at the solids. If you use toxic chemicals, they will kill the bugs and the septic tanks will fill up with solids and have to be pumped out. If the solids drift into the septic tank lines, your leech field can solidify. That can cost the landowner a lot of money in replacements. You may not be worried about that directly, but that means more parks will close due to maintenance cost or at the least, drive higher prices due to septic maintenance.

When clean, be sure to put about 2 gallons of water into the tank and then add the two tablets.

We've had pretty good success with no odors using this method.

And when it comes to tank sensors...Ignore them. They never work anyway. It's a waste of money to have them. Same for both the grey and black water tanks. The only that seems to be somewhat accurate is the H2O tank.

Happy Glamping!

There is a lot that can be done.

First off I have never been a fan of the blue stuff for the black tank. I much prefer the Odorlos product. I've found the best price believe it or not at Camping World. My preference is the 6lb bucket. The bucket lasts us a couple of months and is great in both the black (2 scoops) and grey tanks (1 scoop).

The other thing we do that we find really helpful is to do a thorough vinegar flush about every other month. It goes like this:

  1. Buy from Walmart or Costco 6 gallon jugs of plan white vinegar. Both places it's is pretty cheap although at Costco we can get 1.25 gallon jugs for about the same price as 1 gallon jugs are at Walmart. Sometimes there isn't a convenience Costco so either will do.
  2. Get regular size bottle of Dawn liquid detergent
  3. On a day that we will be pulling 100+ miles to a full hookup site, empty all the tanks and if possible run the black tank rinse for about 10-15 minutes.
  4. After the rinse add 2 parts water and 1 part vinegar to each tank. In our rig that means 2 of the 6 gallons of vinegar into the toilet, 2 into the shower and 2 into the kitchen sink. Then 4 gallons of water into the same places. I use the empty jugs to measure out the water. Finally add 1/3 of the bottle of Dawn into each tank.
  5. Go drive. Expect if you stop for lunch and when you arrive at your destination for the rig to smell like a pickle factory. This is a good thing as it means the mixture got sloshed around and is cleaning the inside of each tank. The smell will quickly dissipate with the doors and windows open and the fans running.
  6. Upon arrival dump first the black then the 2 grey tanks. Now rinse each tank 2 or 3 times with clean water. For the black tank I generally use a back fill connector but you can also do this with the black tank rinse. For the grey tanks you can just fill completely the galley tank by running the kitchen sink and for the head (bathroom) tank the shower. It takes some time but make sure to get them as full as possible before emptying them. I usually fill them all up before releasing the water to allow it to sit in between rinses, but I think that is probably overkill.
  7. Once done with the rinsing, add 2 scoops of the Odorlos to the black tank and then hold the foot pedal down for about 30 seconds. That is standard procedure for adding it to the black tank.
  8. Generally I then add 1 scoop of the Odorlos down the shower and into the kitchen sink with the valves closed along with enough water for the granolas to devolve.
  9. As with all things RV maintenance, repeat as necessary.

Hope this helps and safe travels.

You make some good points with your plan. Thanks for this alternative suggestion! GipC

The smell could also be coming from the kitchen or bathroom sink vents. The galley grey water can smell as bad or worse than the black. The vents on mine are behind the spice rack in the kitchen & up behind the sink under the bathroom sink, might be with a check.
The key to the black tank is to use the flush connection the rinse the tank several times after dumping. I usually dump, back flush for several minutes with clear water, add a healthy squirt of cheapo dish/laundry soap & fill a few minutes, then rinse til suds are gone, add a couple gallons of water & add your chemicals. Have done procedure for the last 10 years fulltiming & do not/have not had any odors from the black tank. We do have smell from the kitchen sink when it's time to dump that gray tank. Typically if we have sewer hooked up the bath gray stays open, or I'd be dumping it daily after showers/laundry, til a day or so before dumping the black. Usually we can go a week on the black tank before dumping so I usually just dump every Sunday.
Regardless of what brand of chemicals you use they are not designed to break down solids or paper, they don't stay in the tank long enough, but are for odor control. RidX or other chemicals for septic won't help unless you you plan to not drain for tank for months, but will be beneficial to whose ever septic you're draining into.
