So its 2 am and I smell a different odor in the rv. I check outside and nothing I check in the basement nothing so I open the circuit breaker panel and feel around and notice the that the bottom breaker is warm. It is labeled conv. I happen to have my digital thermometer and it registers 95 degrees. Its a 20 amp breaker so I turned it off. The bottom of the breaker panel has two cooling fans that I have never turned on. Can someone feel their CB panel below the bottom breaker and let me know if its warm to the touch or not. I will tear apart the basement this morning to get to the inverter to see if its hot to the touch. Could this have caused my res refrigerator to crash or vise a versa.
Almost sounds more like you have some loose connections in the panel. I would disconnect the shore power, pull the cover off the panel and check the tightness of everything in there.
The converter should have nothing to do with the Res Fridge. If your's is like ours power for the fridge doesn't even go through the breaker panel.
On occasion I have noticed heat coming from the converter section (vents at the bottom of the converter panel). I have never heard the fans come on though. I'm not saying they don't come on but that I don't ever recall hearing them come on. When I first felt the warmth I was alarmed but have never experienced any electrical issues on either my 12-volt or 120-volt systems. My guess is that when the converter needs to charge at a higher amp rate the converter warms up.
If you had an older unit with the Halogen bulbs you would hear the fans. On our '12 36RL as soon as we turned on the main kitchen/living room ceiling lites the fans would kick on. Once we changed out to LEDs, never heard the fans again.
Ken -
I've got my converter turned off because of our solar/whole house inverter setup, but I have had a breaker go bad in our panel. Specifically it was the back A/C breaker would trip spontaniously. Initially thought it was the A/C unit but turned out to just be the breaker.
In this case I guess it could be either the converter or the breaker or something else entirely.
