Looking to take a short trip to Mackinaw City so we can visit the Island... Does anyone have any good tips on close campgrounds that are RW friendly ??
Joe
Joe,
When heading to the Rally last year my original plan was to cross the border at Sault Ste Marie and then overnight either side of the Macinaw Bridge.
I considered the casino at St Ignace for an overnight stop. Very basic, but had good reviews.
We changed plans and arrived a day earlier, so drove straight through.
I vaguely remember also considering a KOA, but had we stopped, we would have opted for the much cheaper basic site at the casino.
We camp up there all the time. So depending on when you go, there are things to consider. if off season you might try the state camp ground at Wilderness Park. Its southwest west of Mackinaw City about 6-7 miles. very busy during the season. We have had our coach on the lake side but if its crowded you will never make it around the loop. If that's the case and you still want to stay in the park, try the "Pines" side. Larger sites and more room to move around. You can't see the lake from that side but an easy walk down the trail to the lake. Very nice park.
There is a KOA park near the state park if you like them. Its just off 75 and south of of Mackinaw City by 4 miles.
If you want to stay on the cheap. There is the Mackinaw City RV park just off the freeway south of the city. Its basically a field for boon docking with a dump site. Its cheap and still close to the city. I think we paid $10.00 - $15.00 for the night. We stayed there a couple of times with no problems.
Of course there are lots of other RV parks east of the city that have the full amenities. Just head out east from the city and you will find them.
Good luck.
